Neuro-Affirming vs Traditional Approaches: What’s the Difference?

26 July 2026

Two people embracing each other warmly

You’ll see the phrase “neuro-affirming” used a lot across my website, and it’s not just a buzzword — it reflects a genuinely different starting point compared to more traditional approaches to neurodivergence.

The Traditional Starting Point

Traditional approaches have often started from the position that neurodivergent traits are problems to be corrected or minimised, with success measured by how closely someone’s behaviour matches a neurotypical standard.

The Neuro-Affirming Starting Point

A neuro-affirming approach starts somewhere different: that neurodivergence is a natural variation in how brains work, not a deficit to be fixed. Support isn’t about making someone act less autistic, less ADHD, or less “different” — it’s about understanding how someone’s brain actually works, and building support around that, rather than against it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

In practice, this shows up as:

  • Focusing on genuine understanding and quality of life, not just compliance
  • Recognising strengths alongside challenges, rather than only cataloguing difficulties
  • Building strategies with someone, based on what actually works for them, rather than imposing a generic template

Why It Matters

Families often tell me they’ve tried approaches before that focused entirely on changing behaviour, without ever asking why that behaviour was happening in the first place. A neuro-affirming approach doesn’t ignore behaviour that’s genuinely difficult to manage — but it starts by understanding it, rather than simply trying to eliminate it.

If This Resonates With You

If you’ve felt that previous support focused too much on “fixing” and not enough on understanding, that’s exactly the gap a neuro-affirming approach is built to close.
