Understanding Behaviours That Challenge: What’s Really Going On?

Behaviour is communication. It’s a phrase I use often, because it’s genuinely at the heart of how I approach behavioural support — but it’s not always obvious what it means in practice.

What “Behaviours That Challenge” Actually Means

This covers a wide range of things: meltdowns, shutdowns, difficulty with transitions, aggression, withdrawal, and everything in between. What ties them together isn’t the behaviour itself, but the fact that something underneath it isn’t being met or understood yet.

Why Looking Beneath the Surface Matters

It’s tempting to focus on stopping a behaviour — but a behaviour that’s suppressed without understanding what drove it tends to resurface somewhere else, often in a way that’s harder to manage. Understanding the underlying need first means the strategies that follow actually fit the person, rather than just managing symptoms.

Common Underlying Causes

In my experience, behaviours that challenge often trace back to one or more of:

  • Sensory overwhelm or under-stimulation
  • Difficulty communicating a need or feeling
  • Anxiety, particularly around unpredictability or transitions
  • A mismatch between what’s being asked and what feels possible in that moment

Building a Plan That Works Day to Day

Once the underlying pattern is clearer, the goal is a set of strategies that actually work in real life — at home, at school, out in the world — not just in theory. That usually means starting small, reviewing what’s working, and adjusting as you go, rather than expecting one plan to solve everything immediately.

If This Sounds Familiar

If you’re currently in the thick of trying to manage behaviour that feels unpredictable or overwhelming, you’re not doing anything wrong by asking for help understanding it. That’s exactly where behavioural support starts.
